As a developer, I spend most of my day immersed in logic, code, and data. Lines of Python and JavaScript are my love languages. So, you might be surprised to learn that my latest passion project isn’t another productivity tool or a complex data analysis platform. It’s an app that helps couples discover their zodiac compatibility percentage.
Why the pivot from pure logic to the cosmos? Because I realized that relationships, much like coding, have their own patterns, languages, and systems. And sometimes, the most complex human connections can benefit from a simple, fun framework to help us understand them better. That’s what I set out to build.
More Than Just a Number
When my partner and I first put our birthdays into the beta version of the app, we watched the wheel spin and land on 85%. We both laughed. Was that “good”? Does it mean we’re 15% doomed? Of course not.
The real magic happened afterward. It sparked a conversation. We started talking about our signs (I’m a pragmatic Capricorn 🐐, she’s a dreamy Pisces 🐠). - Mapping the Elements: Each sign is associated with an element: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Certain elements are naturally more harmonious. For instance, Water and Earth signs often nurture each other, just like rain on soil.
- Analyzing Modalities: We also look at the “modality” of each sign: Cardinal (leaders), Fixed (stabilizers), and Mutable (adapters). A relationship with two Cardinal signs might involve a power struggle, while a Cardinal and a Fixed sign might complement each other perfectly.
- The Compatibility Algorithm: The app weighs these factors (and a few other astrological aspects, like planetary rulers) using a scoring system. The formula might look something like this in principle:
