Before we judge them, we have to understand them. Most modern “therapy bots” use Natural Language Processing (NLP).
When you type, “I’m feeling anxious about my job,” the AI isn’t “feeling” sympathy for you. It is breaking your sentence into tokens (chunks of text), analyzing the sentiment, and predicting the most statistically probable comforting response based on the massive dataset of human conversations it was trained on.
It is mimicking empathy, not experiencing it. Does that distinction matter if it helps you feel better? That is the billion-dollar question.
