Summoning Genius: How I Mastered AI Prompts (and You Can Too!)

Hey everyone, Nicole here, writing from my little corner of Pasadena.

If you’ve spent any time with AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, you’ve probably had this experience: you ask it a question, and you get a bland, generic, and utterly uninspired answer. It’s frustrating. You know this powerful intelligence is lurking under the hood, but you can’t seem to coax it out.

As an ML student and the developer behind a few AI-powered apps (like my Grimoire Oracle!), I’ve spent countless hours learning how to “talk” to these models. I’ve discovered that getting a brilliant result isn’t about some secret technical code; it’s about mastering the art of the prompt. Think of it less like programming and more like a form of enchantment—you need the right words, in the right order, with the right intention.

Ready to stop getting boring answers and start summoning some real genius? Here’s how I do it.

1. Be the Director: Specificity and Context are Everything

This is the golden rule. The most common mistake is being too vague. The AI doesn’t know what it doesn’t know. You have to provide the context and constraints.

  • Vague Prompt: “Write about horror films.”
  • Masterful Prompt: “Write a three-paragraph analysis of how the theme of inherited trauma is explored in the Giallo subgenre, using Dario Argento’s ‘Suspiria’ (1977) and the film ‘Hereditary’ as key examples. Assume the reader is familiar with basic film theory but new to Giallo.”

See the difference? We gave it a topic, a format (three paragraphs), specific examples, and an intended audience. You are the director; the AI is your (very talented) actor. Give it stage directions.

2. Assign a Role: The Power of Persona

This is my favorite trick. You can literally tell the AI who to be. Assigning a persona dramatically shapes the tone, style, and content of the response.

  • Generic Prompt: “Explain Hermeticism.”
  • Persona-driven Prompt: “You are a seasoned Gnostic scholar with a flair for storytelling. Explain the core principles of Hermeticism to a curious but skeptical university student in a way that is both academic and captivating.”

This technique is incredibly powerful. I’ve had AI act as a snarky SEO expert, a 17th-century alchemist, a minimalist web developer, and even a film noir detective.

3. Define the Blueprint: Set the Format

Don’t just leave the structure to chance. Tell the AI exactly how you want the information presented. This is crucial when I’m generating code snippets for my blog or brainstorming app features.

Ask for your output as a:

  • Bulleted list
  • Numbered list
  • Markdown table
  • JSON object
  • HTML/CSS snippet
  • A formal essay with a bibliography

Example: “Generate a list of five blog post ideas about the intersection of AI and modern esoteric practices. Please format the output as a Markdown table with three columns: ‘Title,’ ‘Target Audience,’ and ‘Key Talking Points.’”

4. Make it a Conversation: Iterate and Refine

Don’t expect the perfect answer on the first try. Think of it as a conversation. Your first prompt is the opening line. The AI’s response is its reply. Now, build on it.

Use follow-up prompts like:

  • “That’s great. Now, can you make it more concise?”
  • “Expand on point number three.”
  • “Rewrite the above, but in a more casual, witty tone.”
  • “Translate that into Python code.”

The magic happens in the back-and-forth.

Let’s Put It All Together: A Real-World Example

Let’s say I want to promote this very blog post.

  • The “Before” Prompt: “Write a tweet about my new blog post on prompt engineering.”
    • (Result: Probably something boring and generic.)
  • The “After” Prompt: “Act as a social media marketing expert specializing in tech and esoteric topics. Write an engaging Twitter thread (3 tweets) about my new blog post, ‘Summoning Genius: How I Mastered AI Prompts.’ The tone should be knowledgeable but approachable, with a hint of my ‘preppy goth’ mystique. Include relevant hashtags like #AI, #PromptEngineering, #Gemini, #ChatGPT, and #TechWitch.”
    • (Result: A targeted, voice-appropriate, and effective social media campaign.)

Mastering prompting is a creative skill, not just a technical one. It’s a dance between your human intention and the AI’s vast potential. So go ahead—be specific, be creative, and start a conversation. You’ll be amazed at the genius you can summon.
