All these new buzz words around Ai keep coming out. Here’s a new one for me…Generative AI. Check out the Google Gemini’s explanation:
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content—like text, images, video, audio, or code—in response to a user’s prompt.
Unlike traditional AI that is primarily used for classification (identifying a cat in a photo) or prediction (forecasting stock prices), generative AI focuses on producing novel output that resembles the data it was trained on.
How it works
Generative AI models, often built using deep learning and neural networks, work by:
- Training on Massive Data: The AI model is trained on vast amounts of existing content (e.g., billions of words of text, millions of images, etc.) to learn the underlying patterns, structures, and relationships within that data.
- Learning Patterns: It develops a probabilistic understanding of the data, essentially learning what elements are likely to follow others (like what word is most likely to come next in a sentence, or what pixel is most likely to come next in an image).
- Generating New Content: When given a prompt or request, the model uses its learned patterns to create something new and original that is statistically likely to be related to the input. It doesn’t copy existing content; it synthesizes new data based on its understanding of the training set.
Common Examples and Applications
Generative AI is responsible for many of the most popular AI tools today:
- Text Generation: Creating essays, summaries, emails, stories, or code (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude).
- Image Generation: Producing realistic photographs, artwork, or manipulating existing images based on text descriptions (e.g., Midjourney, DALL-E, Stability AI).
- Audio Generation: Composing music, synthesizing voices, or generating sound effects.
- Video Generation: Creating video clips or animations from text prompts.
- Code Generation: Writing, completing, or debugging software code.
