Making a magic bottle (aka witch bottle or spell jar) is a highly personal and intuitive process. It’s essentially a physical representation of your intention, sealed and focused to manifest a specific outcome. Since you’re interested in tarot—specifically the Thoth deck—you might find that building a spell jar is somewhat similar to constructing a reading: you’re selecting elements that resonate with the energy you want to channel.
Here is a straightforward guide to crafting a spell jar with herbs.
1. Define Your Intention

This is the most crucial step. What are you trying to achieve? Your intention dictates everything else, from the herbs you choose to the color of the wax you use to seal the bottle. Common intentions include:
- Protection: Shielding yourself or your home from negativity.
- Prosperity/Abundance: Drawing in wealth, success, or new opportunities.
- Self-Love/Healing: Fostering compassion for yourself or emotional recovery.
- Focus/Clarity: Aiding in concentration, perhaps for studying or a complex project.
Write this intention down on a small piece of paper. You want to be specific, phrasing it as if it has already happened (e.g., “My home is safe and peaceful,” rather than “I want my home to be safe”).
2. Gather Your Materials

You don’t need expensive or hard-to-find items. Most of what you need can probably be found in your kitchen or a local grocery store.
| Component | Purpose | Examples |
| The Container | To hold and seal the spell. | Any small glass jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid or cork. Clean and dry it thoroughly. |
| The Base | To anchor the spell and provide a foundation. | Salt (sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, or black salt for protection), sugar (for sweetening a situation). |
| The Herbs | To add specific energetic properties. | See the herb guide below. |
| Crystals (Optional) | To amplify the energy. | Clear quartz (amplifies), amethyst (intuition), rose quartz (love), black tourmaline (protection). |
| A Candle | To seal the jar with wax. | The color should ideally match your intention (e.g., green for prosperity, black or white for protection, pink for love). |
A Quick Herb Guide

Different herbs are traditionally associated with different energies, each bringing its unique properties and potential benefits to those who utilize them. For example, rosemary is often linked to clarity and remembrance, making it a popular choice for enhancing mental focus and boosting memory. On the other hand, chamomile is revered for its calming effects, helping to promote relaxation and alleviate stress. Here are a few common ones that have been used throughout history: basil, sage, and thyme, each embodying distinct therapeutic qualities that can enhance our well-being when harnessed properly.
- Protection: Rosemary, basil, sage, bay leaves, cloves, black pepper.
- Prosperity: Cinnamon, mint, chamomile, ginger, nutmeg.
- Love/Healing: Rose petals, lavender, thyme, vanilla.
- Clarity/Intuition: Mugwort, peppermint, lemongrass.
Where to Buy
You can purchase a bunch of dried herbs and flowers from good ol’ Amazon, Etsy or even on SHEIN or TEMU. I prefer Etsy since it promotes smaller businesses.
For books on the subject matter check out Amazon Books. My favorite is Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Llewellyn’s Sourcebook Series).
3. Assemble the Jar

This is a tactile, mindful process. As you add each ingredient, focus on your intention and why you are adding that specific item.
- Cleanse Your Space and Materials: Essential for removing stagnant energy. Before you begin, cleanse the jar, your ingredients, and your workspace. You can do this by passing them through the smoke of incense (like frankincense or sandalwood) or by using sound (like a singing bowl or bell).
- Add the Base: Start by adding your salt or sugar to the bottom of the jar. This forms the foundation.
- Add the Herbs and Crystals: Layer your chosen herbs and any crystals you’re using. As you add each one, you can state its purpose aloud (e.g., “I add rosemary for protection and clarity”).
- Add the Written Intention: Take the paper with your written intention. Fold it toward you (to draw things in) or away from you (to banish things), and tuck it into the center of the herbs.
- Seal the Jar: Place the lid or cork firmly on the jar. Light your candle and carefully drip the melted wax over the top, sealing the closure. As the wax drips, visualize your intention being locked in and starting to work.
4. Placement and Activation

Once the wax is cool, your spell jar is ready. Where you put it depends on its purpose:
- Protection jars: Place near the front door or bury them near the entrance to your home.
- Prosperity jars: Keep on your desk, in your workspace, or near where you keep your wallet.
- Healing/Sleep jars: Place on your nightstand or under your bed.
Give the jar a little shake every now and then to “wake up” the energy.
