The Saturnine Complex: Philology and the “Star of Remphan”
Location: Pasadena, CA Mood: Analytical 🕯️
In my ongoing study of esoteric traditions and religious history, I recently encountered a fascinating, if controversial, area of scholarship: “Astrotheology.” This field posits that the core tenets of the Judeo-Christian tradition are not merely influenced by celestial symbolism but are, in fact, masked continuations of pagan astral cults.
The first major theory I want to examine is the “Saturnine Complex”—the assertion that Judaism is fundamentally a cult of Saturn (Kronos). While this sounds like modern conspiracy theory, it actually rests on a specific philological discrepancy found in the biblical text itself.
There is a notable divergence between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament regarding a specific idol. In Amos 5:26, the prophet condemns the Israelites for carrying the “tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god.” However, when Stephen quotes this passage in Acts 7:43, the name changes to Remphan: “the star of your god Remphan.”
Historical-critical scholarship clears up this confusion. The Hebrew term Kiyyun is a vocalization of the Akkadian Kayamanu (“The Steady One”), which was the specific Mesopotamian name for the planet Saturn. When the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek (the Septuagint) in Alexandria, the translators likely substituted the obscure Akkadian term with Remphan (or Raiphan), the Egyptian/Coptic name for Saturn, to make it intelligible to their audience.
Thus, the text preserves a genuine historical memory: the ancient Israelites did, at times, engage in the syncretic worship of the Assyrian Saturn-deity. However, identifying this ancient lapse with modern Jewish practice requires a leap of logic that we will examine—and dismantle—in the next post.
On another note – Here are the correspondences and sprits of Saturn from my Notebook LM.

The spirits and correspondences of Saturn govern the spheres of restriction, binding, profound knowledge, death, and time. In the Western ceremonial tradition, Saturn corresponds to the Sephirah Binah (Understanding) on the Tree of Life.
I. Spiritual Hierarchy
The hierarchy of spirits associated with Saturn ranges from high Archangels to the specific “blind” forces used in talismanic magic.
- Archangel: The primary Archangel is Cassiel (or Caphriel). Other sources, such as Agrippa, identify the angel Zaphiel (or Zaphkiel) with Saturn.
- Olympic Spirit: The Olympic spirit ruling Saturn is Aratron. He is said to appear on Saturday and can convert any living thing into stone, or turn treasures into coals and vice versa.
- Planetary Intelligence and Spirit: In the Solomonic and Agrippan traditions, the “Intelligence” (guiding spirit) is Agiel, and the “Spirit” (blind or active force) is Zazel.
- Angels of Saturday: According to the Heptameron and The Secret Grimoire of Turiel, the ruling angels are Cassiel, Machatan, and Uriel.
- Spirits of the Air: The King of the spirits of the Air for Saturday is Maymon. His ministers are Abumalith, Assaibi, and Balidet.
- Goetic Hierarchy: The rank of Knight is attributed to Saturn. The spirit Furcas is explicitly listed as a Knight.
- Grand Duke: The Black Raven identifies Aziel as a Grand Duke of the infernal empire associated with Saturn.
II. Temporal and Directional Rulership
- Day: Saturn rules Saturday (the Sabbath).
- Planetary Hours: Saturn governs the 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd hours of Saturday. It also rules specific hours on other days, such as the 5th and 12th hours of Sunday, and the 2nd and 9th hours of Monday.
- Wind: The spirits of the Air of Saturday are subject to the Southwest Wind.
III. Correspondences
Physical and Natural
- Metal: Lead is the primary metal. Gold is sometimes associated with Saturn due to its heavy weight, though it is solary in nature.
- Colors: Black. Other associations include leaden, brown, and earthy colors. In the Qabalistic “King Scale,” Saturn corresponds to Indigo.
- Stones: Onyx, Loadstone (Magnet), Sapphire, Garnet, Jet, Obsidian, Hematite, and Apache Tear.
- Plants and Trees: Cypress, Pine, Yew, Oak, Beech, Elm, Ebony. Herbs include Poppy (especially black), Henbane, Mandrake, Hellebore, Rue, Cumin, Dragon-wort, and Hemlock.
- Animals: Mole, Ass, Wolf, Hare, Toad, Serpent, Scorpion, Cat, Hog, Bear, Camel, Ape, Dragon, Basilisk.
- Birds: Ostrich, Peacock, Owl (specifically Screech-Owl and Horned-Owl), Bat, Lapwing, Raven, Crane, and Vulture.
Anatomical and Sensory
- Body Parts: The Right Ear, Spleen, Bones, and Teeth.
- Taste: Sour, tart, and dead.
Incense and Fumigations
- Primary: Sulphur.
- Roots: Pepperwort, Costus, and Frankincense tree roots.
- Complex Mix: The Black Raven suggests a fumigation for evil spirits (often Saturnine) containing garlic, sulfur, pitch, and Christ herb. A perfume for Aratron includes Saffron, Wood of Aloes, Elder, and Pine.
IV. Appearance and Manifestation
When summoned, the spirits of Saturn generally appear with a tall, lean, and slender body. They may have an angry countenance with four faces: one on the back of the head, one in front, and one on each knee (shining black). Their motion is likened to the wind with an earthquake, and their sign is white earth, whiter than snow.
Common Familiar Shapes:
- A King with a beard riding a dragon.
- An Old Man with a beard.
- An Old Woman leaning on a crutch.
- A Hog, Dragon, or Owl.
- A Black Garment, a Hook or Sickle, or a Juniper Tree.
V. Nature and Office
Saturnine operations are typically conducted for:
- Restriction and Binding: Delaying, binding, and hindering buildings or plantings.
- Knowledge: Profound understanding, profound contemplation, and secret knowledge.
- Death and Inheritance: Matters of death, the elderly, and ancestry.
- Alchemy: The “Blackening” (Nigredo) phase and the transmutation of metals.
- Destruction: To cause sorrow, discord, hatred, and to kill or maim.
- Protection: Talismans of Saturn can protect against obsession and help in childbirth if the planet is dignified favorably.
