The celestial rulers of days and hours in Western ceremonial magic form a complex hierarchy grounded in the “Chaldean order” of the planets. This system asserts that specific spiritual entities govern time divisions, creating a dynamic framework where the efficacy of magical operations depends on aligning with the correct astrological current.

I. Rulers of the Days of the Week

Each day is governed by a specific planet, which lends its “virtues” and magical character to that 24-hour period. This rulership determines the primary Archangel and the subordinate Angels who preside over that day.

There is also a distinction between the Intelligence (a benevolent, guiding spirit) and the Spirit (a “blind” or active force, often used for material works) of the ruling planet.

  • Sunday (The Sun):
    • Archangel: Michael.
    • Angels of the Day: Michael, Dardiel, Huratapel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Nakhiel.
    • Planetary Spirit: Sorath.
    • Magical Focus: Authority, wealth, health, and honors.
  • Monday (The Moon):
    • Archangel: Gabriel.
    • Angels of the Day: Gabriel, Michael, Samael.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Malkiel (or Malcha).
    • Planetary Spirit: Chasmodai (or Hasmodai).
    • Magical Focus: Intuition, dreams, voyages, and domestic matters.
  • Tuesday (Mars):
    • Archangel: Samael (sometimes Camael or Zamael).
    • Angels of the Day: Samael, Satael, Amabiel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Graphiel.
    • Planetary Spirit: Barzabel.
    • Magical Focus: Conflict, courage, strength, and overcoming enemies.
  • Wednesday (Mercury):
    • Archangel: Raphael.
    • Angels of the Day: Raphael, Miel, Seraphiel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Tiriel.
    • Planetary Spirit: Taphthartharath.
    • Magical Focus: Communication, intellect, business, and science.
  • Thursday (Jupiter):
    • Archangel: Sachiel (also Zadkiel/Tzadkiel).
    • Angels of the Day: Sachiel, Castiel, Asasiel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Iophiel (or Yophiel).
    • Planetary Spirit: Hismael.
    • Magical Focus: Wealth, expansion, luck, and obtaining favors.
  • Friday (Venus):
    • Archangel: Anael (also Haniel/Hanael).
    • Angels of the Day: Anael, Rachiel, Sachiel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Hagiel.
    • Planetary Spirit: Kedemel.
    • Magical Focus: Love, pleasure, social harmony, and friendships.
  • Saturday (Saturn):
    • Archangel: Cassiel.
    • Angels of the Day: Cassiel, Machatan, Uriel.
    • Planetary Intelligence: Agiel.
    • Planetary Spirit: Zazel.
    • Magical Focus: Structure, binding, discipline, and endings.

II. Rulers of the Planetary Hours

The day is further divided into Planetary Hours. These are “unequal hours,” calculated by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset by 12 (for day hours) and sunset to sunrise by 12 (for night hours).

The Rule of Succession:

  1. The first hour of any day (sunrise) is always ruled by the Planet and Archangel governing that specific day (e.g., the 1st hour of Sunday is ruled by the Sun/Michael).
  2. The subsequent hours follow the Chaldean Order of the planets from slowest to fastest: Saturn –> Jupiter –> Mars –> Sun –> Venus –> Mercury –> Moon.
  3. This cycle repeats continuously through the day and night.

Dynamic Function of Spirits: A critical magical doctrine states that the nature of an angel changes based on the day. For example, if the angel Samael (Mars) is invoked during a Mars hour on a Monday (ruled by the Moon), his power is modulated by the Lunar current. If invoked on a Tuesday (Mars day) in a Mars hour, his martial power is pure and absolute.

III. The Pauline Angels of the 24 Hours

Distinct from the rotating planetary hours, the Ars Paulina (Book III of the Lemegeton) assigns a fixed, specific Angel to each of the 24 hours of the day and night. These angels command vast hierarchies of dukes and servants.

Angels of the Day Hours:

  1. Samael (Sunrise)
  2. Anael
  3. Veguaniel
  4. Vachmiel
  5. Sasquiel
  6. Samiel
  7. Banyniel
  8. Osmadiel
  9. Uvadriel
  10. Oriel
  11. Bariel
  12. Beratiel

Angels of the Night Hours:

  1. Sabrachon (Sunset)
  2. Taktis
  3. Sarquamech
  4. Jdfischa
  5. Abasdashon
  6. Zaazenach
  7. Mendrion
  8. Narcriel
  9. Pamiel
  10. Iasgnarim
  11. Dardariel
  12. Sarandiel

For spell casting

  1. Find the time and day that corresponds to your desire;
  2. write down your intent with ink on paper, including the celestial names.
  3. Burn it.

Pro Tip: Add a bit of blood on the paper and recite the celestial/sacred names including the names of the seasons as well as Conjugations from The Magus volume 2. You can find them rather easily via my updated app Planetary Hour Grimoire.
