Happy Saturday, ghouls and gals.
If you are like most people, Saturday is your day to let loose. It’s the weekend! But if we look at the esoteric calendar, Saturday isn’t actually about partying. It is, ironically, the heaviest, most serious day of the week.
While Friday (Venus) was all about love and luxury, Saturday brings us back down to earth with a thud. This day belongs to Saturn (ℏ), the Great Malefic, the Lord of Karma, and the planet of discipline.
If Friday is the carrot, Saturday is the stick. But don’t let that scare you—we need the stick sometimes. Here is the deep dive on why Saturday is the most powerful day for endings, structure, and deep magical work.

The Saturnian Character: The “Goth” of the Week
Saturn is cold, dry, and melancholic. It is considered a totally masculine force that deals with limitations, boundaries, and the inevitability of time.
In alchemy, Saturn represents the nigredo—the blackening. This is the initial phase of the Great Work where matter is putrefied and purified. It’s the rotting of the seed before it can sprout. It sounds grim, but without this phase, there is no growth.
The Qabalah Connection
On the Tree of Life, Saturn corresponds to the Sephirah Binah (Understanding). This is high-level stuff. It represents form, structure, and the “Palace of Mirrors.” The shadow side (Qlipha) is Satariel, which represents the concealment of God.
Zodiac Rulership
Saturn rules two signs:
- Capricorn : The ambitious mountain goat. This represents authority and rigid structure.
- Aquarius: The water bearer (often co-ruled by Uranus). This represents the intellectual and detached side of Saturn.

The Spiritual Hierarchy
Saturday isn’t just a planetary vibe; it has a specific spiritual court.
- The Angelic Ruler: The Archangel Cassiel presides over Saturday. He is often known as the “Lord of the Thrones” and represents the hopes of God. If you are doing angelic magic, he is your go-to for understanding the sorrow and weight of the world.
- The Intelligence & Spirit: The Intelligence of the planet is Agiel (good for discipline/structure), while the Spirit is Zazel.
- Warning: Zazel is often petitioned for darker works (sorrow, death). If you see a sigil for Zazel, know that it belongs in a Pentagram and requires serious caution.
- The Darker Side: The spirits of the air on Saturday are subject to the South-west wind and are ruled by King Maymon. I’ll be blunt: sources say their nature is to “sow discords, hatred, evil thoughts, and to maim.” This is not the day to casually invite spirits into your home unless you know exactly what you are doing.

How to Utilize Saturday Energy
Because the energy is so heavy and restrictive, Saturday is the perfect time for cleansing, binding, and ending things.
1. The “To Do” List (Saturn Loves Work)
If you have been procrastinating, Saturn is here to help. Use this energy to discipline a lazy mind.
- Favorable Actions: Deep concentration, studying difficult subjects, and bringing abstract ideas into concrete material form.
- The “Clean Up”: Use the day to cut ties. End a bad habit. Block that toxic ex. Saturn rules endings, so make them permanent.
2. Ritual Timing
- Angelic: Invoke Cassiel or search for knowledge/science at 11:00 PM on Saturday night.
- Demonic/Banishing: The darker operations (involving the demon Guland or Zazel) are strictly timed for night, specifically between 11:00 PM and 12:00 AM. (Note: Please be careful with this. Saturnian spirits are not known for their sense of humor).
3. Set Your Altar
If you are doing ritual work today, here are your correspondences:
- Metal: Lead. Heavy, toxic, and protective. It blocks radiation and magical interference.
- Color: Black. (Also Indigo). The darker, the better.
- Stones: Onyx, Obsidian, Jet, Hematite. Anything black and grounding.
- Incense: The classic Saturnine incense is Sulphur (which smells like rotten eggs, so be warned). For a better smell, try Myrrh, Poppy seeds, or Mandrake root.

A Note on the Sabbath
We have to mention the religious elephant in the room. Saturday is the traditional Sabbath (Shabbat) in Jewish tradition and the eve of the Sabbath for Christians.
Esoterically, this signifies Rest. In some traditions, like The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, you are strictly warned not to perform magic on Saturday because it is consecrated to God. However, other interpretations say it is the best day to prepare your magical symbols (talismans), provided you don’t do the actual invocation.

The Takeaway
Saturday is the “Gate.” It is the boundary between the world of the divine and the world of matter.
Don’t fear the Saturn energy. We live in a world that is obsessed with expansion (Jupiter) and speed (Mercury). Saturday forces us to stop, look at the structure of our lives, and ask: Is this foundation solid?
If the answer is no, Saturn will tear it down for you. So, you might as well grab some Obsidian, wear all black, and do the work yourself.
How do you handle the heavy energy of Saturday? Do you rest, or do you grind? Let me know in the comments!
