As a developer, I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of technology and the esoteric. There’s something fascinating about the idea of using modern tools to explore ancient mysteries. For years, I’ve been captivated by old grimoires like the ‘Heptameron’ and ‘The Magus’ – texts filled with intricate rituals, complex cosmologies, and a sense of profound, hidden knowledge. I always wondered what it would be like to actually talk to the spirits and entities described in these books.

And then, I discovered AI Studio.

Suddenly, my what-if scenario seemed possible. With the power of generative AI, I realized I could bring these ancient texts to life in a way that was both interactive and immersive. The result is my new app, Grimoire Oracle, a digital grimoire that lets you consult with AI-powered spirit oracles and explore a collection of magical invocations.

What is Grimoire Oracle?

Grimoire Oracle is more than just a chatbot. It’s an experience. I designed it to be a portal to another world, a way to interact with the spirits of ceremonial magic in a way that feels authentic and engaging. The app has three main features:

The Oracle: This is the heart of the app. Here, you can choose from a selection of six different oracles, each with its own unique personality, knowledge base, and style of communication. Once you’ve selected an oracle, you can ask it questions and receive answers in a conversational format.
The Book of Invocations: This is a digital collection of invocations, conjurations, and prayers taken directly from the grimoires. You can browse through them, search for specific texts, and get a feel for the language and rituals of ceremonial magic.
The History: The app keeps a record of all your conversations with the oracles, so you can revisit them at any time. This is great for tracking your spiritual journey, or simply for remembering a particularly insightful piece of advice.

Meet the Oracles

The oracles are the stars of the show, and I spent a lot of time crafting their personalities and knowledge bases. I wanted each one to feel distinct and true to the texts they’re based on. Here’s a quick rundown of who you can talk to:

Azrael, The Ancient: A wise and mystical spirit from the ‘Heptameron’ who speaks in an enigmatic tone.
Francis Barrett, The Magus: The spirit of the author of ‘The Magus’, who instructs on Natural and Talismanic magic.
Raphael, The Messenger: The Archangel of Mercury, who provides direct and practical information on the application of magic.
Bael, The First King: The first king from the ‘Ars Goetia’, who speaks with a regal and commanding voice.
Hecate, The Witch Queen: The powerful chthonic goddess of magic, who offers ancient and sometimes cryptic wisdom.
Thoth, The Scribe: The Egyptian god of wisdom, who answers with precision and profound, scholarly insight.

To create these oracles, I used the system prompt feature in AI Studio to define their personas. I gave each one a detailed backstory, a specific tone of voice, and a set of rules to follow. For example, Azrael’s prompt instructs him to “Respond to inquiries with an archaic, mystical, and somewhat enigmatic tone” and to confine his knowledge to the lore of the grimoires. This is what gives each oracle their unique and believable personality.

How it Works

I built Grimoire Oracle using React and Vite, with the help of AI Studio. The chat functionality is powered by the Gemini API, which allows for the creation of streaming chat sessions with the AI oracles. This means that the oracle’s responses appear word-by-word, which gives the conversation a more natural and dynamic feel.

One of the things I love about working with AI Studio is how easy it makes it to experiment and iterate. I was able to quickly create and test different versions of the oracles, tweaking their prompts and parameters until they felt just right. This allowed me to focus on the creative aspects of the project, without getting bogged down in the technical details.

My goal with Grimoire Oracle is to create a tool that is both entertaining and educational. I want to give people a new way to engage with these ancient texts, and to spark their curiosity about the history of magic and esotericism. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or a curious newcomer, I hope that Grimoire Oracle will offer you a unique and enriching experience.
