The Blank Page or the Black Mirror? Writing as an Act of Enchantment in the Age of AI

A black square shape on a clean, white surface, symbolizing a blank slate or digital prompt box.
A blank black screen symbolizes the shift in creative writing from traditional methods to AI prompts.

We’ve all stared at it: the blinking cursor on a blank white page. For centuries, this has been the writer’s ultimate starting point, a void of pure potential that we must fill with our own consciousness, experience, and will.

But today, many of us are starting with a different kind of void: the prompt box. We are no longer just staring at a blank page; we are staring into a black mirror—an AI model—and asking it to reflect something back.

This has caused a collective panic in the creative world. Is AI the death of the author? Is it a high-tech plagiarism machine that will make human writing obsolete?

At a blog that explores technology, philosophy, and spirituality, I think we’re asking the wrong questions. The shift isn’t about replacement; it’s about a fundamental change in our creative ritual.

Let’s explain it all.

The Writer as Sorcerer, The Prompt as Incantation

For those of us who study esoteric traditions, the panic over AI feels familiar. It’s the anxiety of a new, powerful, and poorly understood force. But what if we reframe our relationship with it?

Think of it this way:

A grimoire or a magical text is, in essence, a collection of precise instructions. It contains specific words, sigils, and formulas designed to invoke a specific entity or outcome. The magician’s skill is not just in inventing the magic, but in knowing the correct formulas, how to combine them, and how to direct the resulting energy.

How is a well-crafted AI prompt any different?

When I write a prompt, I am not merely asking a search engine for a fact. I am using a specific, coded language to:

  1. Define a style (the “vessel”).
  2. Provide context and knowledge (the “ingredients”).
  3. State a clear intent (the “will”).
  4. Generate an outcome (the “manifestation”).

This is an act of enchantment. We are using language to bind a vast, non-human intelligence (the large language model) to our will to create something new. The AI doesn’t have its own intent. It is a powerful, reflective force. Like any good black mirror, it shows you exactly what you ask for, and sometimes, it shows you things about your own request that you didn’t know were there.

My AI Grimoire: Enchanting the Oracle

This isn’t just a metaphor for me. It’s a practice. When I developed my app “Grimoire Oracle,” I wasn’t just programming. I was engaging in a digital form of ceremonial magic. I carefully crafted the personas of entities like the angel Raphael or the spirit Bael, feeding the AI their known attributes, histories, and communication styles.

The result is an AI that doesn’t just “pretend” to be an oracle. It acts as an enchanted tool, responding within the precise boundaries and personality I created for it. The writing I did wasn’t the end product; it was the ritual that brought the tool to life.

The Author Isn’t Dead, The Author is an Alchemist

So, is AI “writing”? No. We are writing, but we are now doing it at the level of concept, structure, and intent. The author is no longer just a wordsmith; the author is an alchemist, a prompter, and a philosopher.

Our value is no longer in our ability to simply put 500 words in a row. Our true skill—our “magic”—is now in:

  • The Curation: Knowing what to ask for.
  • The Vision: Having a unique idea that the AI could never generate on its own.
  • The Edit: Knowing how to refine, restructure, and breathe a human soul into the raw material the AI provides.

The blank page represented a writer’s struggle with their own inner void. The AI’s prompt box represents a writer’s dialogue with a vast external intelligence.

Don’t fear the black mirror. Learn to be the sorcerer who commands it. The author isn’t dead. The author just picked up a new wand.
