Explaining the Thoth Deck: Why It’s Not Just ‘Tarot’ (It’s a Map of the Universe)

A cloaked figure stands in the center of a circular cosmic design, surrounded by astrological symbols and tarot cards on the floor.

When most people hear “tarot,” they picture a specific set of images. These include a robed magician, a skeleton on a horse, and a wheel of fortune from the classic and most widely recognized Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) deck. It is the one in the little yellow box that has defined “tarot” in pop culture for a century.

And that deck is fantastic. It’s a brilliant storytelling tool, full of rich, psychological archetypes.

But then, there’s the other deck. The one that’s beautiful, abstract, and vaguely intimidating. The one that feels less like a storybook and more like a final exam for a class you didn’t know you were taking.

I’m talking about the main deck of Salem/New Orleans-type witches like me, the Thoth Tarot, conceived by Aleister Crowley and painted by Lady Frieda Harris.

If the RWS is an introductory psychology textbook, the Thoth deck is the entire “college-level” course catalog for the entire university’s esoteric studies program. As an explainer, I want to set the foundation for why this deck is so different.

The Thoth deck isn’t just a tool for divination. It’s a system. It’s a visual grimoire that attempts to codify the entire Western magical tradition into 78 cards. It is, quite literally, a map of the universe.

It’s Not a Deck, It’s an “Engine”

Crowley wasn’t just trying to make a “better” fortune-telling deck. He was trying to create a complete visual summary of all magical philosophy. He and Lady Frieda Harris (a brilliant artist and Egyptology scholar in her own right) worked on it for five years, from 1938 to 1943.

They were building an engine of correspondences. The “magic” of the Thoth deck is in its layers. You don’t just “read” a card; you decode it. Every single card in the deck is a precise blend of three massive systems:

  1. Kabbalah (The Scaffolding)
  2. Astrology (The Timing & Flavor)
  3. Thelema (The Operating System/Philosophy)

To understand this deck, you have to understand its components.

1. The Scaffolding: The Kabbalistic Tree of Life

This is the “secret engine” of the Thoth deck. If you’ve ever felt like the card meanings are arbitrary, you won’t after this. The entire deck is a visual representation of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

Here is the “Explains It All” breakdown:

  • The 10 Sephirot (Spheres): The Tree is made of 10 spheres, or “Sephirot,” which are divine emanations. These are the Ace through 10 cards in each of the four suits. They represent the journey of an element from its purest form (the Ace) to its final, material manifestation (the 10).
    • Example: The 10 of Swords (“Ruin”) isn’t just a “bummer” card. It’s the 10th and final sphere (Malkuth, “The Kingdom”) in the suit of Air (“Intellect”). It represents the absolute, logical end of an idea, where intellect has nowhere left to go but to collapse on itself. It is “Ruin.”
  • The 22 Paths: These are the “connections” between the 10 spheres. These 22 paths are the 22 Major Arcana.
    • Example: The “Lovers” card isn’t just about romance. It’s the path connecting the sphere of “Understanding” (Binah) with the sphere of “Beauty” (Tiphareth). It represents the choice and intellectual analysis (Binah) required to find harmony (Tiphareth).

The Tree of Life is the why behind every card.

2. The Flavor: Astrology

This is the layer that makes the Thoth deck a “college-level” masterpiece. Crowley and Harris mapped every single card to an astrological planet or sign.

  • Major Arcana: These are mapped to the 12 Zodiac signs and the 10 planets (in the classical sense). For example, The Magus is Mercury (communication, tech, intellect). The Empress is Venus (love, beauty, nature).
  • Minor Arcana (2-10): This is the genius part. The 36 numbered cards (excluding the Aces) are mapped to the 36 decans of the Zodiac. A decan is a 10-degree slice of a sign.
    • This is how you really read the cards: The 5 of Disks (“Worry”) isn’t just “worry.” Its attribution is Mercury in Taurus. What does that mean? It’s the “mind” (Mercury) stuck in the “material/slow/stubborn” (Taurus). It’s overthinking physical problems you can’t change. That is the definition of worry.

Suddenly, the meanings aren’t just something to memorize; they are something you can derive.

3. The Operating System: Thelema

You can’t talk about this deck without talking about Aleister Crowley and his philosophy of Thelema. This is the “software” the whole system runs on.

He famously “updated” several cards to reflect his new philosophy, which is centered on the idea of finding and enacting one’s “True Will.”

  • “Judgement” becomes “The Aeon”: Crowley believed the world had left the “Aeon of Osiris” (patriarchal religion) and entered the “Aeon of Horus” (the child, individual consciousness). This card isn’t about a Christian “Judgement Day”; it’s about a new era and a new way of thinking.
  • “Strength” becomes “Lust”: This is the most famous one. In the RWS deck, “Strength” shows a woman gently taming a lion, representing a kind of suppression of the ‘beast.’ Crowley’s “Lust” card shows the Whore of Babalon riding the beast, fully embodying its power. It’s a card of unadulterated passion, joy, and raw, instinctual power, not of taming it.
  • “Temperance” becomes “Art”: “Temperance” is about finding a middle ground. “Art” is about the alchemical process of combining two opposites to create a third, new, higher thing. It’s an active, creative process, not a passive compromise.

A Map for Your “Everyday Life”

So why is this a “Map of the Universe”?

Because it connects everything. It shows how the 10 spheres of Kabbalah are the same as the 4 elements, which are the same as the 12 signs of the Zodiac, which are the same as the 22 paths of the human soul.

The Thoth deck isn’t for asking “Does he love me?” (though you can).

It’s a deck for asking, “What is the fundamental, astrological, and philosophical nature of the ‘Love’ I’m currently experiencing?”

It’s a visual grimoire. It’s an app for the soul. It’s an engine for understanding. And in future posts, we are going to take this engine apart, piece by piece, and learn how to drive.
