Is It a Sign or Is It Your Brain? (Meet the RAS)

We’ve covered the history of angel numbers, and we’ve dived deep into the spiritual meanings behind the digits. But I know exactly what the skeptics among us are thinking right now.
In fact, I can hear the rational side of my own brain whispering it: “Nicole, you’re only seeing 11:11 because you’re looking for it.”

Here is the plot twist: Science actually agrees with you.
But before you close the tab and decide that all magic is fake, stick with me. Because just because something is happening in your brain doesn’t mean it’s meaningless. In fact, the science of why we see signs is almost as fascinating as the signs themselves.
Let’s talk about the biology of belief.

The Gatekeeper: Meet Your Reticular Activating System (RAS)
If your brain were an exclusive nightclub, the Reticular Activating System (RAS) would be the bouncer standing at the velvet rope.
Located at the base of your brainstem, the RAS has a very specific job: Filtering.
At any given second, your senses are being bombarded with millions of bits of data. The hum of the refrigerator, the feel of your socks on your feet, the color of the wall, the text notification on your phone. If your brain tried to process all of that at once, you’d short-circuit.
So, the RAS steps in. It takes instructions from you on what is important and ignores the rest.
When you decide that the number 333 is significant—maybe you read a blog post about it, or you made a wish at that time—you are essentially updating the guest list for the nightclub. You are programming your RAS with a new command: “Look for 333. This is high priority.”
Suddenly, you aren’t seeing 333 more often because the universe is printing more threes; the frequency of the number hasn’t changed. You are just finally noticing it every time it appears, while your brain quietly deletes 3:32, 4:18, and 12:01 from your conscious awareness.
It is a self-fulfilling prophecy of attention. You seek, and your RAS ensures you find.

The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon
Psychologists have a name for this experience: the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, also known as the “frequency illusion.”
You know how when you decide you want to buy a specific make and model of a car, say a white Jeep, suddenly it seems like everyone in Los Angeles is driving a white Jeep? They didn’t all just buy them yesterday. They were always there; you just stopped ignoring them.
The same applies to magic. You learn a new piece of spiritual information—like “444 means protection”—and suddenly, license plates, receipts, and phone numbers are screaming 444 at you.
Our brains love patterns. When we spot a pattern we recognize, we get a tiny hit of dopamine—an emotional reward. That feeling of “Aha! I saw it!” reinforces the behavior, making your brain hunt for that pattern even more aggressively.

Why It Still Matters (Enter Jung)
So, does this mean it’s all fake? Is it just a biological trick?
Not necessarily. And this is where we bridge the gap between neuroscience and spirituality.
The famous Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung introduced the concept of Synchronicity. He defined this as “meaningful coincidence.” Jung understood that the human mind and the external world are deeply connected.
Even if your RAS is doing the filtering, and even if the frequency illusion is at play, two things remain true:
- The Timing: You saw the sign at the exact moment you needed to see it.
- The Meaning: The interpretation you give the sign has real-world power.
Let’s look at it practically. If seeing 444 gives you the sudden courage to leave a toxic job, or if seeing 11:11 reminds you to take a deep breath and center yourself during a panic attack, does the source of the message matter?
The “reality” of an angel sending you a text message is less important than the reality of the change it caused in your life. If the sign works, it works.
The Takeaway
Whether it is a neurological quirk of the Reticular Activating System or a divine DM from the universe, the result is the same: It helps us make sense of the chaos.
If your brain is hardwired to look for meaning, why not give it something positive to look for? I’d rather my RAS be programmed to find hope, guidance, and magic than to focus on stress and fear.
So, keep looking for the signs. Your brain is built for it.
