The Esoteric Significance of Tuesday
According to Western esotericism, Tuesday holds a distinct cosmic significance rooted in its planetary and spiritual associations. The system of planetary days is a cornerstone of this tradition, with each of the seven days ruled by one of the seven classical planets. Tuesday’s character and energy are shaped by its ruler, Mars.
Planetary and Spiritual Rulership
- Planetary Ruler: Mars. Governed by the martial planet Mars, Tuesday is a day infused with energy, courage, and passion. It is considered a favorable time for physical activity, confrontation, asserting boundaries, and initiating new projects.
- Angelic Ruler: Camael or Samael. In addition to its planetary ruler, each day is presided over by a specific Archangel, a “higher class of celestial intelligence”. The Archangel associated with Tuesday is Camael or Samael.
- Zodiacal Signs: Aries, Scorpio. The zodiacal signs corresponding to Tuesday’s planetary ruler, Mars, are Aries and Scorpio.
The System of Planetary Hours
The esoteric system of planetary rulership also extends to the hours of the day. The first hour of Tuesday is ruled by Mars and the Archangel Camael or Samael. The subsequent hours follow the “Chaldean order” of the planets, which arranges them by their geocentric apparent speed from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This sequence repeats over the course of the 24 hours. This system allows a practitioner to find the most “astrologically and spiritually propitious time” for a given magical operation.
Planetary Intelligences and Spirits
Drawing from the grimoire tradition, The Magus distinguishes between different orders of spirits associated with each planet.
- Planetary Intelligence: Graphiel. The Planetary Intelligence represents a planet’s abstract, rational principle.
- Planetary Spirit: Barzabel. The Planetary Spirit is the more material or “blind” force of the planet.
These spirits are associated with war and conflict, and their aid can be sought for courage, victory, and overcoming enemies. The magician invokes the Intelligence (Graphiel) to control the Spirit (Barzabel), thereby channeling the planetary energy for a specific purpose.
