The Esoteric Significance of Sunday

In Western esotericism, Sunday holds a distinct cosmic significance rooted in its planetary and spiritual correspondences. The system of planetary days is a cornerstone of this tradition, with each of the seven days governed by one of the seven classical planets. Sunday’s character and energy are shaped by its ruler, the Sun.
Planetary and Spiritual Rulership
- Planetary Ruler: The Sun. Associated with the Sun, Sunday is a time for focusing on health, success, personal power, and financial matters. Its energies are dynamic, life-giving, and creative.
- Angelic Ruler: Michael. In addition to its planetary ruler, each day is presided over by a specific Archangel, considered a higher class of celestial intelligence. The Archangel associated with Sunday is Michael.
- Zodiacal Sign: Leo. The zodiacal sign corresponding to Sunday’s planetary ruler, the Sun, is Leo.
The System of Planetary Hours
The esoteric system extends the principle of planetary rulership to the hours of the day. The first hour of any given day is ruled by the same planet that rules the day itself. Therefore, the first hour of Sunday is ruled by the Sun and the Archangel Michael. Subsequent hours follow the “Chaldean order” of the planets, which arranges them based on their apparent speed from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This intricate system provides a powerful framework for magical practice.
Planetary Intelligences and Spirits

Drawing from the grimoire tradition, as compiled in The Magus, each planet is associated with distinct orders of spirits.
- Planetary Intelligence: Nakhiel. The Planetary Intelligence represents a planet’s abstract, rational principle.
- Planetary Spirit: Sorath. The Planetary Spirit is the more material or “blind” force of the planet.
This pair governs matters of vitality, success, and leadership. Invocation of their energies is used for gaining temporal wealth, achieving fame, and obtaining favor from authority figures.
