my first magical textbook
Have you ever felt the pull of ancient mysteries? For centuries, seekers, scholars, and magicians have been captivated by the hidden currents of the universe. They have explored everything from the influence of the stars to the nature of spirits. If this world of esoteric knowledge fascinates you, then you are in for a treat. Today, we’re offering a foundational text of Western esotericism. You can download Francis Barrett’s The Magus; or, Celestial Intelligencer for free.
Published in 1801, The Magus is a comprehensive encyclopedia of occult philosophy. It draws together centuries of magical tradition into one volume. Written by Francis Barrett, a self-proclaimed “student of Chemistry, Natural and Occult Philosophy, the Cabala, &c.”, this work serves as both a theoretical guide and a practical grimoire for the aspiring magician.
Let’s explore what lies within the pages of this incredible text.
Part I: The Science of Magnetism
Before you think of simple iron magnets, understand that Barrett’s concept of Magnetism is far grander. It is the study of the universe’s hidden connections—the “sympathy, antipathy, magnetic attraction, &c.” that binds all of creation. This section, drawing from the works of Paracelsus and Van Helmont, explores the principle of “action at a distance”.
Barrett illustrates this with fascinating examples:
- How wine in an underground cellar can become troubled the moment its corresponding vines flower miles away.
- How a pregnant woman’s intense craving can create a birthmark in the shape of the desired object—like a cherry that changes color with the seasons on the child’s skin.
This is the invisible, universal spirit at work, a fundamental concept for understanding the operations of magic7.
Part II: Cabalistical and Ceremonial Magic

This is the heart of The Magus. Barrett provides a structured guide to the intricate world of ceremonial magic, which he calls “intellectual and divine”8. He insists that this practice requires preparation, secrecy, and a pure mind to be successful9999.
Within this section, you will discover:
- The Divine Names and Sephiroth: Learn about the ten sacred names of God and the ten Sephiroth, or divine emanations, through which the Creator influences all things, from the highest angels to the celestial spheres10. For example, the name Eheia is linked to the numeration Cether, meaning “a crown or diadem,” and it influences the world through the order of seraphims11111111.
- The Hierarchy of Spirits: The text details the different orders of spirits. These include super-celestial angels who exist solely to worship God. Celestial angels govern the heavens and stars. Ministering angels oversee the affairs of Earth. It also covers the nature of evil spirits, their fall, and their nine contrary degrees.
- A Practical Grimoire: This is not just theory. Barrett provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for magical operations, including:
- The creation of holy pentacles and seals to bind evil spirits and allure good ones.
- The proper method for composing a magical circle, complete with the names of angels for the specific day and hour.
- Conjurations and exorcisms for each day of the week, with details on the specific angels, perfumes, and considerations for each.
- The art of necromancy and how to call forth the souls of the dead by using their spiritual affinity for their former bodies.
Bonus: The Works of Trithemius
As an invaluable addition, Barrett includes a translation of the works of Johannes Trithemius of Spanheim, a legendary 15th-century abbot and occultist. This includes his “Book of Secret Things, and of Spirits” and instructions on “The Art of Drawing Spirits into Crystals”.
A Word of Caution from Barrett Himself
Barrett is clear that this knowledge is not for the profane or the wicked. He warns the reader directly. If your desire is for wealth, power, or selfish aggrandizement, “thou hast reason to lament thy being born.” He advises the student to “seek to know thyself thoroughly.” Cleanse thy heart from all wicked, vain, and rapacious desires. Sincerity, humility, and a love for God and your neighbor are the true keys to wisdom.
