The Esoteric Significance of Thursday
Thursday holds a unique cosmic significance in Western esotericism due to its planetary and spiritual correspondences. As part of the system of planetary days, Thursday’s character and energy are shaped by its ruler, Jupiter.
Planetary and Spiritual Rulership
- Planetary Ruler: Jupiter. Associated with Jupiter, this is a day of expansion, abundance, and luck. It is considered the best day for magical workings related to prosperity, high achievement, and spiritual development.
- Angelic Ruler: Sachiel. Each day is governed by a specific Archangel, a “higher class of celestial intelligence”. The Archangel associated with Thursday is Sachiel.
- Zodiacal Signs: Sagittarius, Pisces. The zodiacal signs that correspond to Thursday’s planetary ruler, Jupiter, are Sagittarius and Pisces.
The System of Planetary Hours
The esoteric system extends the principle of planetary rulership to the hours of the day. The first hour of Thursday is ruled by Jupiter and the Archangel Sachiel. The subsequent hours follow the “Chaldean order” of the planets—Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This framework allows a practitioner to find the most “astrologically and spiritually propitious time” for a given operation.
Planetary Intelligences and Spirits
Based on the grimoire tradition compiled in The Magus, each planet is associated with distinct orders of spirits.
- Planetary Intelligence: Iophiel. The Planetary Intelligence represents a planet’s abstract, rational principle.
- Planetary Spirit: Hismael. The Planetary Spirit is the more material or “blind” force of the planet.
Their powers relate to expansion, fortune, and good health. Jupiter’s spirits can be invoked for obtaining honors, acquiring riches, and contracting friendships!
