Magic Monday

Monday in ceremonial magic is all about the Moon and its chill vibes, like that fluid, intuitive, and homely energy we all love. It’s the perfect day to focus on change, secrets, movement, and that feminine power that makes everything a little more magical.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the characteristics, rulers, and ritual correspondences associated with Monday:

I. Planetary Rulership and General Character

A mystical scene depicting a full moon illuminating a circular altar surrounded by candles, with ethereal beings, possibly angels, in flight above, and swirling clouds enhancing the magical atmosphere.

Monday is ruled by the Moon.

  • Planetary Nature: The Moon is associated with moisture, change, visions, and generation. Its nature is described as cold and moist. It is characterized as a feminine planet and of the night.
  • Complexion and Influence: The Moon’s complexion is phlegmatic. It is known as the conveyer of the virtue of all other planets and the lesser fortune. In Hebrew, the Moon is called Labona or Malx.
  • Magical Purpose (Favors): Monday’s energies are linked to emotions, intuition, family, and home life. It is considered an opportune time for healing, divination, and developing psychic abilities. Specific works favored include dreams, fantasy, astral journeys, giving birth, eroticism, paranormal abilities, and witchcraft.

II. Spiritual Rulers and Hierarchy

Monday is governed by a specific hierarchy of angels and spirits:

  • Angelic Ruler (Archangel): The Archangel presiding over Monday is Gabriel. Gabriel’s name is interpreted as “the endurance (or strength) of God,” and he is the prince of the Angels, the order that presides over the Moon. Other primary angels ruling Monday include Michael and Samael.
  • Planetary Spirits/Intelligences: The spirit of the Moon is Hasmodai (or Chasmodai). The intelligence of the Moon is Malcha.
  • Angels of the First Heaven: The angels of the first heaven rule on Monday.
  • Angels of the Air: The Angels of the Air ruling Monday are under Arcan, King. His ministers are Bilet, Missabu, and Abuzaha (or Abuhaza). These air spirits are subject to the West-winde.
  • Infernal Rulers:
    • The Demon of Monday is Lucifer, who is conjured at night between eleven and twelve o’clock, or between three and four o’clock.
    • Demons may also be invoked by Satanists on Monday, where Lucifer is invoked. Lucifer may be invoked on Monday at dawn, provided the conjurer wears a new stole and surplice and offers a live mouse as a pledge.
  • Goetic Rulers: The Marquises of the Goetia are listed as associated with Monday, including Gamigin, Amon, Naberius, Ronove, and Marchosias.

III. Magical Operations and Powers

The spirits of the air of Monday have a nature that grants specific effects:

AttributeSignificance
Material GainTo give silver.
Movement/TransportationTo convey things from place to place; to make horses swift.
DivinationTo disclose the secrets of persons both present and future.
Water/ElementsThe Moon governs the elements and the bodies of living creatures; the spirit Gabriel created the sea, lakes, and all waters on the second day.

IV. Timing and Appearance

Ritual activity must align with the Moon’s influence:

  • Planetary Hours: The first hour of Monday (beginning at sunrise) is ruled by the Moon (Angel Gabriel). This also applies to the eighth hour of the day and the third and tenth hours of the night.
  • Demonic Timing: Lucifer, the Demon of Monday, is conjured at night between eleven and twelve o’clock, or between three and four.
  • Angelic Timing: The spirit Zadkiel is to be invoked on a Monday and in the Morning. Other good angels should be invoked on a Monday at Daybreak.
  • Ritual Materials: The appropriate perfume or fumigation for Monday is Aloes, sometimes mentioned alongside Jasmine or Red Wheat. The ruling metal is Silver.
  • Appearance of Spirits: Lunar spirits appear in a large and full body, soft and phlegmatic. Their color is like a dark and obscure cloud. Their motion is described as being like an exceeding great tempest of the sea, and the sign of their presence is the manifestation of great rains.
  • Familiar Shapes: Lunar spirits may appear as a king, like an archer, riding upon a doe. Other shapes include a little boy, a woman-hunter with a bow and arrows, a cow, a little doe, or a goose. They may wear a green or silver-coloured garment.

V. Astrological and Cosmological Context

  • Zodiacal Sign: The Moon has one house only, Cancer. Cancer is also the associated sign of the day. The genii attributed to the Watery Regions (including the signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are governed by Gabriel and are to be observed on Mondays towards the North.
  • Qlipha: Monday is associated with the Qlipha Gamaliel.
  • Elemental Rulership: The Moon is associated with the Watery Regions and the element Water. In the hierarchy of the four elements of man, the humours resemble water, and the imagination is linked to water.
  • Magical Constraints: If a magician calls the angel Samael on a Monday (under the Moon’s dominion), his office and powers are modulated by the Moon’s attributes.

Note on Lunar Phasing: Operations must generally be aligned with an increasing (waxing) moon, with specific days such as the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, or 14th being profitable. The full moon is also specified as a good time to work, especially on Monday and Tuesday.
