Try my new ‘Planetary Hour’ App: Bridging Ancient Magic and AI
Above is my planetary hours app article. But, what are they and why are they significant in esoteric practices like ceremonial magic?
The concept of Planetary Hours is a fundamental discipline within the tradition of ceremonial magic and Western esotericism. It represents a granular, intricate division of time governed by celestial forces.
What Are Planetary Hours?

Planetary Hours are a system of dividing time based on the influence of the seven classical planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon.
- Basis in Planetary Rulership: The entire system of celestial timing is predicated on the influence of these seven planets, which lend their virtues and powers to specific temporal periods.
- Unequal Hours: A key characteristic of a planetary hour is that it is an “unequal hour,” meaning its length is variable rather than being a fixed 60-minute period.
- Day Hours: The time between local sunrise and local sunset is divided into twelve equal parts; each part is a Planetary Hour of the day.
- Night Hours: Similarly, the time between sunset and the next sunrise is divided into twelve equal parts; each part is a Planetary Hour of the night.
- Rulership Succession: The Planetary Hours follow a continuous cycle determined by the “Chaldean order” of the planets, arranged from slowest to fastest: Saturn ((h)), Jupiter ((4)), Mars ((\sigma)), the Sun ((\odot)), Venus ((\text{G})), Mercury ((\text{F})), and the Moon ((\text{D})).
- Daily Starting Point: The first hour of any given day is always ruled by the same planet that governs the day itself (e.g., the first hour of Sunday is ruled by the Sun).
- The Cycle: After the first planet rules the first hour, the subsequent hours follow the Chaldean order, repeating the seven-planet cycle three times over the course of the 24 hours. The fact that the 25th hour (the first hour of the next day) is correctly ruled by the planet three places down the Chaldean order from the current day’s ruler demonstrates the mathematical coherence of the system.
- Specific Rulers: Each hour is ruled by a planet and a specific angel, who are categorized as a higher class of celestial intelligence. For instance, on a Tuesday, the first hour of the day is ruled by the planet Mars and the angel Samael.
Why Are Planetary Hours Significant?
The significance of Planetary Hours is multifaceted, serving as the essential temporal framework for almost all ritual work in ceremonial magic.
1. Guaranteeing Efficacy and Alignment
The primary significance lies in the belief that the efficacy of magical operations is contingent upon performing them at auspicious times when the heavens are favorably disposed.
- Harnessing Cosmic Energy: Using planetary energy, or vibration, in magical works increases their effectiveness. A ritual timed to coincide with a planet’s vibration (e.g., a love-drawing ritual timed to Venus) will have a tremendous impact.
- A Learned Practice: This systematic adherence to astrological propriety elevates the practice from folk sorcery into a learned practice aligned with the Renaissance drive to discern divine order in the cosmos.
- Microcosm and Macrocosm: The daily cycle of Planetary Hours is seen as a microcosm of the weekly cycle, demonstrating a profound cosmological logic where the practitioner must harmonize their work with the rhythms of the universe.

2. Modulating Spiritual Powers
The Planetary Hours are crucial because they determine the office and nature of the spirits being invoked, a doctrine articulated in the Ars Paulina.
- Contextualized Authority: An Angel of the Hour is not a static entity; its power and office are contextualized and modulated by the dominant astrological current of the day.
- Example of Samael: If the angel Samael (who rules the first hour of the day) is invoked during an hour ruled by Mars on a Monday (a day ruled by the Moon), his office and powers are attributed to the Moon. However, if Samael is invoked during a Mars-ruled hour on Tuesday (Mars’s day), his office will be entirely attributed to martial virtues.
3. Prescribed Timing for Operations and Implements
Knowledge of the Planetary Hours is the basis for a set of strict practical protocols, essential for success and safety in magic.
- Talismanic Magic: The correct Planetary Hour is critical for creating talismans and images to capture and channel specific planetary virtues. Seals must be made according to the “time of the year, day and hour that you call the Angel”.
- Invocation of Spirits: Spirits (both angels and demons) must be called during the day and hour of the planet to which they are subject. For example, the Solar Spirit Och should be invoked on a Sunday at Daybreak.
- Binding Spiritual Hierarchies: The timing for binding different ranks of spirits (Kings, Marquises, Dukes, etc.) is strictly scheduled according to the hours of the day and night. For instance, Dukes may be bound only from Sunrise till Noonday in Clear Weather.
- The Ars Paulina: This tradition details a “highly detailed system of specific, named angels governing the 24 hours of the day and night,” providing a precise set of spiritual contacts for any given moment.
