A Last-Minute Guide to Simple Samhain Divination

Happy Samhain aka Halloween!

It’s finally here. That electric, haunted night when the air itself feels different. You can feel it, can’t you? That slight spiritual buzz, the feeling of being watched (in a good way), the sense that something is listening.

In my last post, we explored why Samhain (what we all call Halloween) is the night when the veil between our world and the spirit world is at its absolute thinnest. It’s the original “witching hour,” a time when communication with our ancestors and our own deepest intuition is crystal clear.

But what’s the point of the veil being thin if you don’t peek through it?

I know what you’re thinking. You’re busy, it’s last-minute, and you don’t have a consecrated black mirror, a 100-year-old grimoire, or even a tarot deck. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need any of it.

Divination isn’t really in the tools. The tools are just a channel. The real magic is, and always has been, your intention. The universe, your ancestors, your higher self—they will use any channel you give them.

So, if you’ve got 15 minutes and a question, I’m going to explain how to get your answers using things you already have in your house.

1. The Talking Book: Simple Bibliomancy

This is one of my absolute favorites for its simplicity and power. Bibliomancy is the art of divination using a book.

The philosophy here is that the book you choose becomes a temporary “oracle.” By asking a question and opening it at random, you are allowing your intuition (guided by spirit) to select a passage that contains the symbolic or direct answer you need.

How to do it:

  1. Find Your Book. Grab a book from your shelf. I personally prefer non-fiction, philosophy, poetry, or a spiritual text. A novel can work, but a cookbook might just tell you you’re hungry (which, honestly, could still be a valid message).
  2. Hold and Focus. Close your eyes. Hold the book in your hands and take a deep breath. Clear your mind.
  3. Ask Your Question. State your question clearly, either aloud or in your mind. A good, open-ended question is best. (e.g., “What energy should I focus on for the coming winter?” or “What message do my ancestors have for me tonight?”)
  4. Find Your Page. Let your thumb slide along the edge of the pages. Whenever it feels right—don’t think, just feel—stop and open the book to that page.
  5. Find Your Line. With your eyes still closed (or averted), run your finger down the page. Stop when you get that same “now” feeling.
  6. Read and Interpret. Open your eyes. Read the sentence or passage your finger landed on. The answer won’t always be literal. Don’t try to force it. Trust the very first impression, feeling, or image that pops into your head. That’s your answer.

2. The Water and the Flame: Easy Wax Scrying (Ceromancy)

This one feels perfectly witchy for a haunted night and is incredibly grounding. Ceromancy is the art of reading shapes formed by molten wax. Here, the fire acts as a purifier for your intention, and the water acts as a scrying glass for your subconscious.

How to do it:

  1. Prepare Your Space. You’ll need a candle (a simple white taper or birthday candle is perfect) and a dark-colored bowl filled with cold water. The dark bowl just makes it easier to see the white wax shapes.
  2. Light and Meditate. Light your candle. Gaze at the flame and focus on your question. Let your mind become calm, letting the question fill your awareness.
  3. Drip the Wax. Once you feel ready, carefully tilt the candle over the center of the bowl. Let the wax drip, drip, drip into the cold water. It will hiss and solidify almost instantly. Do this until you feel a small shape has formed.
  4. Interpret the Image. Blow out the candle. Gently lift the wax clump from the water and observe it. Turn it around. What do you see?
  5. Read the Sign. Much like seeing shapes in clouds, you’re looking for a symbol. Does it look like a letter? An animal? A key? A coin? A heart could mean new love, a serpent could mean hidden wisdom or a warning, a “G” could be an initial. Again, trust your first instinct.

3. The Harvest Oracle: Traditional Apple Divination

This is an old, old Samhain folk-magic tradition that’s so simple, it was often played as a parlor game. But don’t let that fool you—it’s pure divination.

How to do it:

  1. Take an Apple. (It is the season of the harvest, after all).
  2. Peel the Apple. Using a small knife, try to peel the apple in one single, long “snake.” If it breaks, that’s okay, just use the longest piece you have.
  3. Ask the Question. The traditional question for this magic was, “What is the initial of the one I will marry?” You can absolutely use that, or you can adapt it: “Show me a symbol for my spiritual path” or “Show me a symbol for my luck this year.”
  4. Toss the Peel. Hold the peel, state your question, and toss it over your left shoulder.
  5. Read the Shape. Look at the shape the peel has formed on the floor. It’s said to form the letter or symbol that answers your question. An “S” could mean “Sam” or it could mean “success.” A “W” could mean “William” or it could mean “wait.” Have fun with this one—it’s meant to be light-hearted but is often spookily accurate.

See? No expensive tools, no complex rituals. Just you, your focus, and a few household items.

The veil is thin, the spirits are whispering, and your intuition is turned all the way up. Go listen.

Happy Samhain,

Nicole
