Harnessing Sunday’s Magic: A Guide to Celestial Rituals

An open ancient book with celestial illustrations resting on a wooden table, alongside a golden chalice, a decorative sword, an ink pot, and scattered herbs, with sunlight filtering through a window.

The considerations and conjurations for Sunday, also referred to as the Lords day, stem from its celestial rulership and define the proper timing, nature, and methodology for magical operations performed during that period.

The Magus on Sunday’s Dominion and Energies

Sunday is fundamentally governed by the Sun (Sol), a celestial body associated with glory, rulership, and divine authority.

  1. Magical Purpose and Favors: The energy of Sunday is dynamic, life-giving, and creative. It is traditionally the time to focus on operations concerning:
    • Health and healing (taking away infirmities).
    • Success, honor, and raising men to honors.
    • Personal power and authority.
    • Financial matters, particularly procuring Gold, Gemmes, Carbuncles, and Riches.
    • Obtaining favor and benevolence.
    • Dissolving enmities among men.
    • Daemon workings and communication with the higher self, long life, and wisdom.
  2. Angelic Rulers:
    • Primary Ruling Angels (Angels of the Lords day): Michael, Dardiel, and Huratapel/Huratapal. Michael is often listed as the Archangelic Ruler. Michael is the great Angel who governs the Fiery Region ($\text{Aries}, \text{Leo}, \text{Sagittarius}$).
    • Angels of the Air: The ruling King of the Air is Varcan, and his ministers are Tus, Andas, and Cynabal.
    • Wind: These spirits are under the governance of the North Wind.
    • Angels of the Fourth Heaven: Angels ruling this day are called from the four parts of the world, including Samael, Baciel, Atel, Gabriel, and Vionairaba (East); Anael, Pabel, Ustael, Burchat, Suceratos, and Capabili (West); Aiel, Aniel (or Aquiel), Masgabriel, Saphiel, and Matuyel (North); and Haludiel, Machasiel, Charsiel, Uriel, and Naromiel (South).

Operational Considerations for Sunday

Operations must be conducted at “proper and convenient times”.

  1. Auspicious Timing:
    • The Sun’s spirits should be observed in the first hour and the eighth hour of the day, and the third and tenth hour of the night.
    • The Solar Spirit OCH, whose spirits teach about the Nature of Angels, should be invoked on a Sunday at Daybreak.
    • For the specific purpose of conjuring the demon Surgat, the operation is performed at night, from eleven to one o’clock.
    • Rituals should align with a waxing moon.
  2. Appropriate Fumigations: The fumigation appropriate for Sunday includes: Saffron, amber, musk, lignum aloes, lignum balsam, the fruit of the laurel, cloves, myrrh, and frankincense. Other sources specify the perfume is Red Sanders or Red Wheat.
  3. Appearance of Sun Spirits: The characteristics and familiar shapes of the spirits associated with the Sun are detailed:
    • Appearance and Color: They appear in a large, full, and great body, which is described as sanguine and cross. Their color is the colour of gold, sometimes with a tincture of blood.
    • Motion and Sign: Their motion is like the lighting of heaven. A physical manifestation of their presence (the sign) is causing the sweat of the exorcist.
    • Familiar Shapes: They may manifest as regal figures or animals: a king with a scepter riding upon a lion; a crowned king; a queen with a scepter; a bird; a lion; or a cock (rooster). They may wear a yellow garment or robes of red and saffron color, and typically carry a scepter.

The Conjuration of the Lords Day

The standard conjuration for Sunday begins by invoking powerful divine names and the creation myth tied to the first day:

  • Invocation of Authority: The operator conjures and confirms the angels “in the name Adonai, Eye, Eye, Eya (which is he who was, and is, and is to come, Eye, Abray); and in the name Saday, Cados, Cados, Cados (sitting on high upon the cherubim); and by the great name of God himself, strong and powerful, who is exalted above all the heavens; Eye, Saraye, who created the world… in the first day, and sealed them with his holy name Phaa“.
  • Invocation to Michael: The prayer specifically calls upon Michael, the great angel and chief ruler of this day, conjuring him by the divine names and the name of the star (Sol), asking him to “labour for me, and fulfil all my petitions according to my will and desire in my cause and business”.

Conjuration of the Demonic Spirit Surgat (Sunday Night)

For the specific operation involving the demonic entity Surgat, the conjuration procedure includes specific preparations:

  • Timing: Performed at night, between eleven and one o’clock.
  • Circle Inscriptions: In the outer part of the circle, the following names are written: TETRAGRAMMATON, TETRAGRAMMATON, TETRAGRAMMATON, ISMAEL, ADONAY, IHUA. In a second circle, the command “Come, Surgat! Come, Surgat! Come, Surgat!” is written.
  • The Demand: Surgat demands a hair of the operator’s head, but the operator must give him a hair of a fox instead. Surgat’s office is to discover and transport all treasures and perform anything the magician wills.

The preparation for any operation on Sunday (or the Lords day) requires strict observance. It is considered a holy day. When making confession for the Ars Notoria, the operator should give double Almes. This is important if a fast day is followed by the Lord’s day. Furthermore, one ritual recommends entering a consecrated place on the Lord’s-day. This should occur during the new of the moon. The place should be covered with white linen to seek an oracle from a spirit.

To understand the celestial structure of Sunday, imagine it as a highly focused lens reflecting the Sun’s light. Every element is carefully tuned to the frequency of sovereignty. These elements include the governing angels, the desired wealth (gold/gems), and the fumigations (saffron/frankincense). Their tuning aims at achieving success. The regal manifestations demand precise timing and materials to harness its powerful, fiery virtue.
