The Ruling Planets of Your Digital Life

Greetings & salutations!

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I love exploring the esoteric—the hidden patterns and ancient energies that shape our world. One of the oldest systems we have for understanding this is planetary magic, based on the seven traditional “ruling planets” of antiquity.

As someone who is also deeply fascinated by technology and AI, I don’t see these two worlds as separate. I see technology as a new, powerful channel for these same ancient archetypes. The energies of the planets didn’t disappear; they just logged on.

So, let’s look at the digital world through that lens. Which planets rule which apps? Here’s how I see it.

A celestial figure resembling Mercury, the Roman god of communication, is depicted with wings and a caduceus, surrounded by various social media icons and app logos symbolizing digital communication and information exchange.

Mercury: The Digital Messenger

Traditional: Mercury (or Hermes) is the god of communication, information, speed, and the mind. He’s the messenger, the trickster, the master of code and language.

Modern: This is Twitter (or X), Google, and your messaging apps (WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage). These platforms are built on the Mercurial energy of speed and information transfer. A tweet is a flash of thought. A Google search is a query sent to the collective mind. It’s the fast, logical, and often chaotic nervous system of the internet.

A digitally rendered image of a woman resembling Venus, adorned with flowers, holding a heart-shaped pendant. She is surrounded by social media icons like Instagram and Pinterest, symbolizing beauty and social connection.

Venus: The Curated Self

Traditional: Venus rules love, beauty, art, aesthetics, social connection, and pleasure. She governs what we value and how we relate to others.

Modern: This is, without a doubt, Instagram and Pinterest. These platforms are purely Venusian. They run on an economy of aesthetics, curated beauty, and social validation (likes and hearts). It’s where we go to perform “the good life,” to be influenced, and to connect through a shared appreciation of visuals.

A dynamic battle scene depicting a god-like warrior, armed with a sword, leading an army of warriors in a red landscape under a large orange sun. The setting conveys a sense of conflict and energy, representing themes of war and assertiveness.

Mars: The Digital Battlefield

Traditional: Mars is the god of war, energy, conflict, drive, and assertion. His energy is fiery, competitive, and direct.

Modern: While Twitter certainly has its combative, Mars-like side, I also see this energy in Reddit and online gaming. The tribalism of subreddits, the “flame wars” in comment sections, and the direct, competitive action of a Call of Duty match are pure Martian expressions. It’s the energy of “I must win this argument” or “I must win this game.”

A digital representation of Jupiter, the king of the gods, seated at a desk with a microphone, laptop, and books, embodying the concept of higher learning and authority in the modern digital landscape.

Jupiter: The Digital Guru

Traditional: Jupiter is the king of the gods, ruling expansion, broadcasting, higher learning, philosophy, and good fortune. He is the “guru” or the “thought leader.”

Modern: This is the domain of YouTube, podcasts, and (of course) blogs! This is where we go for “higher learning”—to watch tutorials, listen to long-form discussions, and read explainers (like this one!). It’s a broadcast medium where anyone can expand their reach and share their philosophy, becoming a Jupiterian authority in their own niche.

A digital representation of Saturn, surrounded by circuit-like graphics and icons representing social media platforms such as LinkedIn, symbolizing the connection between traditional astrology and modern technology.

Saturn: The Digital Architect

Traditional: Saturn rules structure, limits, rules, authority, and time. He is the great architect, the disciplinarian, and the master of the material world.

Modern: I see Saturn in the “backend” of the internet. This is LinkedIn, with its rigid structures of careers, hierarchies, and professional rules. It’s also GitHub and the very code that builds these platforms—a world built on logic, discipline, and unbending rules. The “algorithm” itself is a deeply Saturnian concept: a hidden authority that defines the boundaries of our digital reality.

The Sun: The Main Character

Traditional: The Sun is the center of the system. It represents the self, the ego, creative self-expression, and the stage. It’s our core identity and vitality.

Modern: This is TikTok. More than any other platform, TikTok is a stage for the individual. It’s built for “main character energy.” It’s where creativity, performance, and personality shine. Your personal website or blog also has this Solar quality—it’s the one place online where you are the center of your own universe.

A glowing full moon reflecting on calm water, surrounded by a dark atmosphere.

The Moon: The Digital Subconscious

Traditional: The Moon rules our emotions, moods, habits, and the subconscious. It’s intuitive, reflective, and deeply personal.

Modern: This is the TikTok “For You” page and your Spotify playlists. These platforms are purely Lunar. They don’t ask you what you want; they feel what you want. The FYP intuits your mood and habits, reflecting your subconscious desires back at you. Your playlists are the literal soundtrack to your inner emotional world, changing with your every mood.

Technology isn’t cold and lifeless. It’s a mirror, and in it, we can see the faces of the same ancient gods and goddesses that have ruled us all along.
