The Esoteric Significance of Wednesday
In Western esotericism, Wednesday holds a special cosmic significance derived from its planetary and spiritual associations. The system of planetary days is a fundamental element of this tradition, with each of the seven days governed by one of the seven classical planets. Wednesday’s energy and character are shaped by its ruler, Mercury.
Planetary and Spiritual Rulership
- Planetary Ruler: Mercury. As the day ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, Wednesday is ideal for intellectual pursuits, travel, and artistic expression. It is a good time for meetings, signing contracts, and engaging in any form of communication.
- Angelic Ruler: Raphael. Each day is presided over by a specific Archangel, considered a higher class of celestial intelligence. The Archangel associated with Wednesday is Raphael.
- Zodiacal Signs: Gemini, Virgo. The zodiacal signs that correspond to Wednesday’s planetary ruler, Mercury, are Gemini and Virgo.
The System of Planetary Hours
The esoteric system extends the principle of planetary rulership to the hours of the day. The first hour of Wednesday is ruled by Mercury and the Archangel Raphael. The subsequent hours follow the “Chaldean order,” which arranges the planets by their apparent speed: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This intricate system provides a powerful framework for magical practice, enabling a practitioner to find the most “astrologically and spiritually propitious time” for a given operation.
Planetary Intelligences and Spirits
Drawing from the grimoire tradition, The Magus classifies different orders of spirits associated with each planet.
- Planetary Intelligence: Tiriel. The Planetary Intelligence represents a planet’s abstract, rational principle.
- Planetary Spirit: Taphthartharath. The Planetary Spirit is the planet’s more material or “blind” force.
These spirits rule over communication, intellect, and business. A practitioner may invoke them for eloquence, divination, and promptness in business matters.
